The Invitation Project

Did you know that for every country in the world, there is at least one person living in Canada. Does that make sense? So, there is someone making a home in Canada who's origin of birth is other than Canada, and for every country in the world other than Canada there is one person...living here. Oh heck, check out the site.

Invitationproject.ca is - allow me to be lazy and quote from the web site - "The "Invitation" project was started in the fall of 1998 by visual artist Esther Bryan. It was born out of recognition that the Canadian fabric is a patchwork composed of aboriginal peoples and of immigrants from every nation of the world." So what Esther Bryan decided to do was create a quilt made of patches that are representative of the different peoples making their home in Canada. Cool eh?

This patch represents Austria - my fathers home country. You can peruse the site for every patch of the quilt or just go straight to your "people" of interest. Included on each page is a description of the patch, a brief history of the country, who made the patch and who sponsored it. The finished quilt (all 120 feet of it) will be on show at the Museum of Civilization in April, and then will go on tour around the country.
